The Monte Sophia Mountain Run is a challenging trail race over the Monte Sophia, also known as Sophienhöhe, which was formed from the overburden of the Hambach lignite open-pit mining. It is located in the Rhineland lignite mining area between Cologne and Aachen, near the town of Jülich and the event venue Niederzier. The 25-kilometer course showcases the most beautiful spots of the Sophienhöhe, including the "Roman Tower" and the Golden Aue, and mostly runs along solid gravel paths. In addition to the main race, there is also the 10 km Heinrich Antons Memorial Run, as well as a 5 km Broisterd loop and children's races.
