The 16th Crystal Marathon took place on the last weekend of February in the Erlebnis-Bergwerk Merkers, 500 meters underground, and attracted over 700 participants. This unique running event is organized annually by the Barchfeld Triathlon Club and offers an extraordinary atmosphere in a former salt mine that served as a storage facility for raw salt until 1993. Participants experience kilometers of road-like tunnels and the largest underground bucket-wheel excavator in the world while tackling the challenge of 750 meters of elevation gain on the winding course.
