Every year on the last Sunday in April, more than a thousand hikers and runners take part in the "Hermannslauf": it covers a distance of 31.1 kilometers from the namesake Hermann Monument near Detmold to Sparrenburg in Bielefeld. The route is known for its challenges, including several ascents and descents, varying terrain, and a multitude of stair steps. Despite the challenges, the event is excellently organized and offers refreshment stations for participants every 3-5 kilometers.
