From October 7 to 17, 2014, Marco Middendorf and Markus Niehues from the Lauftreff Osterfeine participated in a torch relay in Europe, where they conquered 1800 km in 9 days with a torch in hand. This run celebrated the 100th anniversary of Schönstatt and attracted nearly 90 runners from 10 nations, who took to the course with personal intentions. After the torch was lit by Pope Francis in St. Peter's Square in Rome, the route passed through remarkable places such as Vesuvius, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and concluded in Schönstatt near Koblenz in front of nearly 10,000 spectators.
Highlights
- Special experiences on the various routes included, among others, Mount Vesuvius, St. Peter's Square with the audience with the Pope, and the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
- Each runner received a personal message to take with them before their leg, which had been sent in from all over the world in advance.
- The route passed through breathtaking landscapes, including the winding roads through the olive groves in Tuscany and the crossing of the Gotthard Pass.
