The Backyard Ultra is an extreme form of long-distance running, where participants must complete a lap of 4.167 miles (6.706 kilometers), for which they have one hour each. The competition only ends when the second-to-last runner drops out, shifting the focus to endurance and willpower rather than speed. Each runner does not know how many laps they will ultimately have to run, and to perform better in the competition, other participants must drop out. This crazy running format was invented by Gary Cantrell, also known as Lazarus Lake, and has become very popular worldwide.
Highlights
- The participants complete a consistent lap of 6.7 kilometers, called a Yard, and have a maximum of one hour to run this lap.
- The competition demands special physical and mental performance, as the runners neither know in advance what distance they will have to cover, nor during the race how much distance is still remaining.
- Every hour, all runners start a new lap, and those who do not finish the lap in time are eliminated.
